How to do an architecture case study

How B.Arch students choose and present architecture case studies: live versus literature case studies, what to analyse, a comparison table and how to turn findings into design inferences.

Ask on WhatsApp

How do you do a case study in architecture?

Pick two to four buildings of the same type and scale as your project, including at least one you can visit (a live case study) and others from books or journals (literature case studies). Study each for its site, planning, zoning, circulation, area statement, structure, services, materials and climate response, then compare them in one table and write the inferences you will apply to your design.

Live and literature case studies

TypeWhat it isBest for
LiveA building you visit, measure and photograph, often with permission and a guided tourReal use, user behaviour, services and details
LiteratureA published building studied from drawings, books, journals and websitesAward-winning or international examples you cannot visit
Net / onlineA literature study built mainly from online sourcesQuick comparisons; check facts against published drawings

What to analyse in each building

  • Site and context, access and parking
  • Planning concept, zoning and circulation (bubble or flow diagram)
  • Area statement: built-up area per function as a percentage
  • Structure and spans, materials and construction
  • Services: water, HVAC, fire, lifts, waste
  • Climate response: orientation, shading, ventilation, daylight
  • What works well and what does not, from your observation or users

Comparison table and inferences

Put all case studies in one table with rows for site area, built-up area, FSI, number of users, key spaces and their areas, structure and special features. Under it, list five to eight inferences such as “a central courtyard improved ventilation and wayfinding” or “separate service entry kept kitchens away from visitors”. These inferences become the brief for your design and are what jurors ask about most.

Presenting case studies on sheets

  1. One sheet per case study: photos, plan, section and analysis diagrams
  2. A comparison sheet with the table and inferences
  3. Credit the architect and source for every image and drawing
  4. Keep the same graphic style as your design sheets: see sheet composition

FAQs

How many case studies are needed for a thesis?

Usually two live and two literature case studies, but follow your college's brief. Choose buildings close in type and scale to your project.

Can I use a building outside India as a case study?

Yes, as a literature case study, but include at least one Indian example so that climate, bye-laws and costs are comparable.

Do I need permission for a live case study?

Ask the building's management before photographing interiors or measuring, carry a letter from your college, and respect private and secure areas.

Where do I find case study drawings?

Architecture journals and books, the architect's website, ArchDaily and similar sites, and your college library. Verify drawings against more than one source.
