Black book for a college project: what it is and how to make one

A black book is the final hard-bound report of your college project. This page explains exactly what it is, what goes inside, how to make one step by step, and how we can prepare it around your own project.

What is a black book in a college project?

A black book is the final project report that diploma and degree students submit at the end of their final year project. It is called a black book because it is hard bound in a black cover with gold lettering. It documents the whole project (problem, literature survey, design, implementation, testing, results and conclusion), carries a certificate signed by the guide, head of department and examiners, and is kept permanently by the college.

What is a black book project?

In Indian colleges, “black book” is the everyday name for the final project report. When a teacher says “submit your black book”, they mean the complete, bound report of your final year or capstone project, not a separate project. Students of diploma, B.E, B.Tech, BCA, B.Sc IT, MCA and M.Tech courses all prepare one.

The name comes from the traditional black rexine hard cover with the project title, student names, college and year embossed in gold. Some universities now allow dark blue or maroon covers or spiral binding for interim reports, but the name has stayed.

How to make a black book for a final year project

  1. Get your department's template and certificate wording before you write anything.
  2. Fix the chapter list with your guide so there are no structural changes later.
  3. Write chapters 1 to 3 (introduction, literature survey, requirements) while the project is still being built.
  4. Draw the diagrams properly in draw.io, StarUML, Proteus or AutoCAD. Do not paste phone photos of hand sketches.
  5. Add implementation and testing as each module is finished: screenshots with captions and a table of real test cases.
  6. Write results, conclusion and future scope last, then the abstract.
  7. Format it: A4, Times New Roman 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing, 1.5 inch left margin, chapter-wise figure numbers.
  8. Check plagiarism and rewrite high-similarity sections.
  9. Get the soft copy approved by your guide before printing.
  10. Print and bind in black with gold embossing, then collect signatures.

FAQs

What is a black book project?

It is the final project report of a diploma or degree course, hard bound in black. Students often say “black book” to mean the final year project report itself.

What is a black book in college?

It is the bound final report of your college project, named after its black cover with gold lettering. It records the problem, design, implementation, testing and results, and is signed by your guide, head of department and examiners.

Why is it called a black book?

Because final project reports are traditionally hard bound in black rexine with golden embossed text. The name is used even where colleges now accept other colours.

How do I make a black book for my final year project?

Collect your department's template, write the chapters in order (introduction, literature survey, requirements, design, implementation, testing, results, conclusion), format on A4 in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1.5 spacing, get the soft copy approved by your guide, then print and hard-bind it.

Is the black book the same as a project report?

Yes. The black book is the final, bound version of the project report. Interim stage reports are usually spiral bound and shorter.

How many pages should a black book have?

Typically 50 to 80 for diploma, 80 to 150 for B.E or B.Tech, and 100 to 200 for PG. Follow your department's guidance.

How much does a black book cost?

The soft copy starts at ₹999 and depends on page count and how much material you already have. It is included in the Advanced and Premium project plans.

Do you provide the printed black book?

Yes, on request. Printing, hard binding and courier are charged at actual cost.

Can you write the black book if my project was made elsewhere?

Yes. Share the project and we document it accurately, then explain it to you for the viva.
