What makes a strong architecture thesis?
Juries reward a thesis that asks a clear question and answers it through design. "A housing project" is a typology; "incremental housing for relocated mill workers on a 2-hectare plot in Pune that lets families add rooms over ten years" is a thesis. The second version tells the jury who the users are, what the site constraints are, and what design idea you are testing.
The other mark of a strong thesis is continuity: the site analysis informs the zoning, the case studies inform the programme, the concept shows up in the plans and sections, and the final sheets tell the story in that order. Mentoring helps you keep that thread visible across a year of work.
How should the thesis year be planned?
| Stage | Typical output | Mentoring focus |
|---|---|---|
| Topic and site | Synopsis, site options, research question | Narrowing the topic, site feasibility, data you can actually get |
| Research and case studies | Live and literature case studies, standards, bye-laws | Choosing relevant cases, extracting lessons, avoiding padding |
| Programme and concept | Area statement, user analysis, concept diagrams | Logical area calculations, a concept you can defend |
| Design development | Zoning, plans, sections, elevations, iterations | Regular reviews, structure and services integration |
| Detailing and 3D | Key details, model, renders, walkthrough | SketchUp, Rhino or Revit modelling guidance, render setup |
| Sheets and jury | Final sheets, model, presentation | Sheet composition, narrative order, mock jury |
How do you choose a thesis topic and site?
Start from what interests you and what you can access. A site you can visit, measure and photograph will give you far better analysis than one you only know from satellite images. Check that the site's area, zoning and surrounding context suit the typology, and that you can get the bye-laws and any survey data you need.
Topics that work well often combine a typology with a specific condition: a school designed for monsoon flooding, a rehabilitation centre that works with an existing heritage structure, a transit hub that stitches together a fragmented neighbourhood. See our list of thesis topics for more ideas grouped by typology.
How does the mentoring run, step by step?
- Share your college, thesis guidelines, topic ideas or chosen site, and your review calendar.
- Free scope call to agree which stages you need help with and how often to review.
- Thesis support is quoted by scope. Pay half to begin and the remainder after the agreed stage is complete.
- Research reviews: case study selection, site analysis structure, programme and area statement.
- Design reviews before each internal jury: plans, sections, concept clarity and structure.
- 3D and render guidance in your software, and sheet composition reviews.
- Mock jury with the questions jurors usually ask on concept, site, structure, services and bye-laws.
What do you get?
- Topic and site feasibility review with a clear research question
- Guidance on case study selection and analysis structure
- Design reviews before each internal jury, with written notes
- Modelling and rendering guidance in SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, Lumion, V-Ray or Enscape
- Sheet composition reviews for a readable, consistent final set
- A mock jury and preparation notes
What do juries ask in a thesis review?
- Why this site, and what did your site analysis change in the design?
- What did you learn from each case study, and where does it show in your plans?
- Explain your concept in one sentence. Where can we see it in the section?
- How does the structure work across the largest span?
- Where are services, fire exits and accessibility provisions?
- Does the design comply with FSI, setbacks and height limits?
- What would you change if you had another month?
How are thesis support and related services priced?
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Sheet composition and presentation | from ₹1,499 |
| Design studio support | from ₹2,999 |
| 3D model and renders | from ₹3,999 |
| Grasshopper and parametric design | from ₹3,999 |
| Full architecture thesis support | Quoted by scope after a free call |
How should thesis case studies be done?
Choose two or three live case studies you can visit and two or three literature case studies of buildings you cannot. Pick them for a reason: the same typology, a similar climate, a comparable site condition or an approach you want to test. For each, record the site plan, zoning, circulation, structure, services, area breakup and what users say about the building.
Finish every case study with a short list of lessons and, later, point to where each lesson shows up in your design. Juries quickly spot case studies that are thirty pages of photographs with no conclusion.
How do you plan the final sheets and model?
- Fix the sheet size and orientation early and agree it with your guide
- Storyboard the sheets as thumbnails: site and analysis, concept, plans, sections, details, 3D
- Keep one consistent graphic language: line weights, hatch patterns, colours and fonts
- Reserve the largest, clearest space for the drawing that carries your concept, usually a section
- Plan the physical or digital model scale so it fits the jury space and shows your key idea
- Print a test sheet at full size before the final print run
How do bye-laws and services shape the design?
Check the local development control rules for your site before zoning: permissible FSI, ground coverage, setbacks, height limits, parking requirements and fire norms for the building type. Note them on one sheet and keep it beside you through design development. Plan service cores, shafts, fire staircases and accessible routes at the zoning stage rather than squeezing them in later. Juries ask about these early, and a design that already answers them earns trust for the rest of the review.
Frequently asked questions
Will you design my thesis for me?
No. Your thesis is your design. We mentor you through research, concept and design development with regular reviews, guide your modelling and sheet composition, and prepare you for the jury.
Which software do you guide in?
AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino with Grasshopper, Revit, Lumion, V-Ray, Enscape, Photoshop and InDesign.
Can you help me choose a thesis topic?
Yes. Share your interests and possible sites. We help you shape a research question and check site feasibility before your synopsis submission.
How often are design reviews?
Usually once or twice a week during design development, timed before your internal juries. We agree the rhythm on the scope call.
Do you help with the thesis report or dissertation?
Yes. We guide the structure, case study write-ups, drawings list, figure captions and references in your college format.
How much does architecture thesis help cost?
Full thesis support is quoted by scope. Individual services start from ₹1,499 for sheet composition and ₹2,999 for design studio support.
