How the Arduino Based Alcohol Sense Engine Lock & GPS works

  1. 12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V.
  2. The Alcohol sensor detects alcohol in the driver's breath.
  3. The Arduino Uno R3 reads the inputs, runs the decision logic written in C/C++ and drives the outputs.
  4. The GSM module sends SMS alerts or makes calls to the registered phone number using a normal SIM card.
  5. The GPS module receives satellite signals and gives the latitude and longitude of the device.
  6. The 16×2 LCD with I2C adapter shows readings, status and messages to the user.
  7. The LEDs indicate status.

E&TC / ECE viva questions on this project

What is the aim of the Arduino Based Alcohol Sense Engine Lock & GPS project?

A drunk-driving prevention system with location alerts. An Arduino reads an MQ-3 alcohol sensor near the driver; if alcohol is detected it stops the vehicle motor and sends an SMS with the GPS location to a family member through a GSM module.

Explain the working of your project in short.

12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V. The Alcohol sensor detects alcohol in the driver's breath. The Arduino Uno R3 reads the inputs, runs the decision logic written in C/C++ and drives the outputs. The GSM module sends SMS alerts or makes calls to the registered phone number using a normal SIM card.

What microcontroller is on the Arduino Uno and what are its key specifications?

The Uno uses the ATmega328P: 8-bit, 16 MHz clock, 32 KB flash, 2 KB SRAM, 14 digital I/O pins (6 PWM) and 6 analog inputs with a 10-bit ADC.

How does the MQ-3 detect alcohol?

Its SnO2 sensing layer becomes more conductive in the presence of ethanol vapour. The analog output rises with concentration and the code compares it with a threshold.

How does the GSM module send an SMS?

The microcontroller sends AT commands over serial, for example AT+CMGF=1 to select text mode and AT+CMGS with the phone number followed by the message. The module transmits it over the mobile network.

How does a GPS module find its location?

It receives timing signals from at least four satellites, calculates the distance to each from the signal delay and solves for its position. The module outputs NMEA sentences like $GPGGA with latitude, longitude and time.

Why is an I2C adapter used with the LCD?

It reduces the wiring from about 10 pins to 2 (SDA and SCL), leaving more controller pins free for sensors.

Explain the block diagram of your project.

The input section senses the real-world quantity, the Arduino Uno R3 processes it according to the program, and the output section acts locally and sends the data or alert wirelessly. The power supply section feeds every block.

Which communication protocols are used between the modules?

UART (serial) for the GSM, GPS, Bluetooth or fingerprint modules, I2C for the display, RTC or motion sensor (only SDA and SCL lines) and analog inputs read by the ADC for the analog sensors. Each protocol was chosen because the module supports it and it uses the fewest pins.

What is the operating voltage of the circuit?

The controller and most sensors work at 5 V (ESP boards and some modules at 3.3 V). A 12 V adapter powers the board, and a regulator steps it down. Motors and relays get their own supply line so they do not reset the controller.
