How the IoT Early Flood Detection & Avoidance works

  1. 12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V.
  2. The Temperature-humidity sensor measures air temperature and relative humidity.
  3. The Ultrasonic sensor measures distance to an obstacle or a liquid surface using sound echoes.
  4. The Water flow sensor measures how much water flows through the pipe.
  5. The Water / rain level sensor detects the presence or level of water.
  6. The Arduino Uno R3 reads the inputs, runs the decision logic written in C/C++ and drives the outputs.
  7. The 16×2 LCD with I2C adapter shows readings, status and messages to the user.
  8. The LEDs indicate status.

E&TC / ECE viva questions on this project

What is the aim of the IoT Early Flood Detection & Avoidance project?

An IoT flood early warning system. It monitors water level, rainfall and other factors and predicts flooding, and the data can be checked from anywhere over Wi-Fi.

Explain the working of your project in short.

12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V. The Temperature-humidity sensor measures air temperature and relative humidity. The Ultrasonic sensor measures distance to an obstacle or a liquid surface using sound echoes. The Water flow sensor measures how much water flows through the pipe.

What microcontroller is on the Arduino Uno and what are its key specifications?

The Uno uses the ATmega328P: 8-bit, 16 MHz clock, 32 KB flash, 2 KB SRAM, 14 digital I/O pins (6 PWM) and 6 analog inputs with a 10-bit ADC.

What is NodeMCU and how does it connect to the internet?

NodeMCU is a development board built on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi chip. It joins a Wi-Fi network using the SSID and password in the code and sends data over HTTP or MQTT to a cloud server.

How does the DHT11 send data to the controller?

It uses a single-wire digital protocol: the controller sends a start pulse and the sensor replies with 40 bits containing humidity, temperature and a checksum.

How does the ultrasonic sensor measure distance?

It sends a 40 kHz pulse and measures the time until the echo returns. Distance = (time × speed of sound 343 m/s) ÷ 2. The HC-SR04 works from 2 cm to about 4 m.

How does the flow sensor measure water flow?

Water spins a rotor with a magnet, and a Hall sensor produces pulses. The pulse frequency is proportional to the flow rate (about 7.5 Hz per litre per minute).

Explain the block diagram of your project.

The input section senses the real-world quantity, the Arduino Uno R3 processes it according to the program, and the output section acts locally and sends the data or alert wirelessly. The power supply section feeds every block.

Which communication protocols are used between the modules?

UART (serial) for the GSM, GPS, Bluetooth or fingerprint modules, I2C for the display, RTC or motion sensor (only SDA and SCL lines), a single-wire digital protocol for the temperature sensor and analog inputs read by the ADC for the analog sensors. Each protocol was chosen because the module supports it and it uses the fewest pins.

What is the operating voltage of the circuit?

The controller and most sensors work at 5 V (ESP boards and some modules at 3.3 V). A 12 V adapter powers the board, and a regulator steps it down. Motors and relays get their own supply line so they do not reset the controller.
