Typical sheet list
| Sheet | Topic | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lines, lettering and dimensioning | Line types, single-stroke letters, dimensioning methods |
| 2 | Geometric constructions | Polygons, tangents, bisecting lines and angles |
| 3 | Engineering curves | Ellipse, parabola, hyperbola, cycloid, involute, spiral |
| 4 | Projections of points and lines | Lines inclined to one or both planes, true length |
| 5 | Projections of planes | Laminae inclined to the HP and VP |
| 6 | Projections of solids | Prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones in different positions |
| 7 | Sections of solids | Sectional views and true shape of section |
| 8 | Development of surfaces | Lateral surfaces of prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones |
| 9 | Orthographic projections | Front, top and side views of machine parts |
| 10 | Isometric projections | Isometric views from orthographic views |
Your college may combine or skip sheets. Follow the sheet list your teacher gives at the start of the term.
Sheet size and layout
- Most colleges use A2 (420 × 594 mm) or half-imperial sheets; some use A1 or A3
- Border 10 mm from the edges (20 mm on the binding side if filed)
- Title block in the bottom right: name, roll no., sheet no., title, scale, date, signature
- Projection symbol (first angle in India) near the title block
- Keep 15–20 mm between problems and centre each drawing in its area
Line types and pencils
| Line | Use | Pencil |
|---|---|---|
| Thick continuous | Visible outlines and edges | HB / B |
| Thin continuous | Dimension, projection and hatching lines | 2H / H |
| Dashed | Hidden edges | H |
| Chain (long dash–dot) | Centre lines, axes | 2H |
| Construction | Faint guidelines, erased or kept light | 2H |
Instruments you need
- Drawing board and mini-drafter (or T-square)
- Set squares (45° and 30°–60°), protractor
- Large and small compass, divider
- Clutch pencils 2H, H, HB and a good eraser
- French curves, scale, sheet clips or tape
How to score full marks
- Draw construction lines lightly and darken only final lines
- Use the correct line types consistently
- Label every point (a, a′, a1) as the method requires
- Write the problem statement and answer neatly in single-stroke capitals
- Dimension as per the standard and keep arrowheads uniform
- Keep the sheet clean: wash hands, cover finished parts, avoid smudging
- Submit on time; most colleges deduct marks for late sheets
FAQs
What is the size of an engineering drawing sheet?
Most colleges use A2 (420 × 594 mm) for first-year engineering drawing, with some using A1 or half-imperial. Check your college's instructions.
Which projection method is used in India?
First angle projection is the standard in India (IS / SP 46), and the first angle symbol is drawn near the title block.
How many sheets are there in engineering graphics?
Usually 6 to 10 sheets in the first year, depending on the university or MSBTE curriculum.
Can Project Buddyy help with drawing sheets?
Yes. We guide students through each sheet and its method so they can draw and explain it themselves; message us on WhatsApp with your sheet list and deadline.
