How the IoT Garbage Monitoring Using Raspberry Pi works

  1. 12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V.
  2. The Ultrasonic sensor measures distance to an obstacle or a liquid surface using sound echoes.
  3. The Raspberry Pi 4 runs Linux and the main program, handles the camera, networking and heavier processing such as image recognition.
  4. The Bluetooth module links the circuit to a smartphone app so the user can send commands or receive readings.
  5. The Buzzer gives an audible alert.

E&TC / ECE viva questions on this project

What is the aim of the IoT Garbage Monitoring Using Raspberry Pi project?

A Raspberry Pi garbage bin monitor. It measures the fill level, sounds a buzzer when the bin is full and lets the user check the bins from anywhere online.

Explain the working of your project in short.

12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V. The Ultrasonic sensor measures distance to an obstacle or a liquid surface using sound echoes. The Raspberry Pi 4 runs Linux and the main program, handles the camera, networking and heavier processing such as image recognition. The Bluetooth module links the circuit to a smartphone app so the user can send commands or receive readings.

Why did you choose a Raspberry Pi instead of an Arduino?

The Raspberry Pi is a full computer with an operating system, so it can run Python, OpenCV and a web server. An Arduino is a microcontroller that is better for simple real-time control but cannot process images or run multiple programs.

How does the ultrasonic sensor measure distance?

It sends a 40 kHz pulse and measures the time until the echo returns. Distance = (time × speed of sound 343 m/s) ÷ 2. The HC-SR04 works from 2 cm to about 4 m.

How does the HC-05 Bluetooth module communicate with the microcontroller?

It uses UART serial at 9600 baud by default. Data typed in the phone app is received by the module and passed to the controller's RX pin as serial characters.

What is the difference between an active and a passive buzzer?

An active buzzer has a built-in oscillator and beeps on DC. A passive buzzer needs a square wave from the controller, which allows different tones.

How is 230 V AC converted to 5 V DC for the circuit?

A transformer steps down the voltage, a bridge rectifier converts AC to pulsating DC, a capacitor smooths it and a 7805 regulator gives a steady 5 V.

Explain the block diagram of your project.

The input section senses the real-world quantity, the Raspberry Pi 4 processes it according to the program, and the output section acts locally and sends the data or alert wirelessly. The power supply section feeds every block.

Which communication protocols are used between the modules?

UART (serial) for the GSM, GPS, Bluetooth or fingerprint modules. Each protocol was chosen because the module supports it and it uses the fewest pins.

What is the operating voltage of the circuit?

The controller and most sensors work at 5 V (ESP boards and some modules at 3.3 V). A 12 V adapter powers the board, and a regulator steps it down. Motors and relays get their own supply line so they do not reset the controller.

What is the difference between accuracy and precision?

Accuracy is how close a reading is to the true value. Precision is how close repeated readings are to each other. A sensor can be precise but inaccurate if it is not calibrated.
