How the IoT Virtual Doctor Robot works

  1. Rechargeable battery supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V.
  2. The NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi board connects the system to Wi-Fi so readings can be pushed to an IoT dashboard and commands received from a phone.
  3. The DC geared motor provides the driving motion.
  4. The Motor driver lets the low-current controller run the motors forward, reverse and at variable speed.

E&TC / ECE viva questions on this project

What is the aim of the IoT Virtual Doctor Robot project?

A telepresence robot that lets a doctor visit patients remotely. The doctor drives the four-wheel robot over the internet and talks to patients through a mounted phone or tablet.

Explain the working of your project in short.

Rechargeable battery supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V. The NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi board connects the system to Wi-Fi so readings can be pushed to an IoT dashboard and commands received from a phone. The DC geared motor provides the driving motion. The Motor driver lets the low-current controller run the motors forward, reverse and at variable speed.

What is NodeMCU and how does it connect to the internet?

NodeMCU is a development board built on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi chip. It joins a Wi-Fi network using the SSID and password in the code and sends data over HTTP or MQTT to a cloud server.

Why is a geared motor used?

The gearbox reduces speed and multiplies torque, so a small DC motor can move a vehicle or mechanism smoothly. Torque increases roughly by the gear ratio.

Why can't the motor be connected directly to the microcontroller?

A motor needs far more current (hundreds of mA to amps) than a controller pin can supply (about 20–40 mA). The H-bridge driver switches the motor current and allows direction control.

How do you calculate battery backup time?

Backup time (hours) ≈ battery capacity (Ah) × voltage × 0.8 efficiency ÷ load power (W). For example, 12 V 7 Ah at 20 W gives about 3.3 hours.

How is the wheel size selected?

From the required speed and torque: linear speed = π × D × rpm ÷ 60. A larger wheel gives more speed but needs more torque.

Explain the block diagram of your project.

The input section senses the real-world quantity, the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi board processes it according to the program, and the output section acts locally and sends the data or alert wirelessly. The power supply section feeds every block.

Which communication protocols are used between the modules?

UART (serial) for the GSM, GPS, Bluetooth or fingerprint modules. Each protocol was chosen because the module supports it and it uses the fewest pins.

What is the operating voltage of the circuit?

The controller and most sensors work at 5 V (ESP boards and some modules at 3.3 V). The battery powers the board, and a regulator steps it down. Motors and relays get their own supply line so they do not reset the controller.

Is your system open-loop or closed-loop?

Mainly open-loop: the controller runs the actuators for a set time or number of steps. Adding a sensor for feedback would make it closed-loop and more accurate.

How do you ensure patient safety?

The device runs on low-voltage batteries, has no direct mains connection to the patient, uses isolated sensors and limits current through any electrode. Alarms are set for abnormal readings.
