How the IoT Weather Drone Airship For Weather Forecasting works

  1. 12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V.
  2. The Camera module captures images or video for recognition and monitoring.
  3. The NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi board connects the system to Wi-Fi so readings can be pushed to an IoT dashboard and commands received from a phone.
  4. The GSM module sends SMS alerts or makes calls to the registered phone number using a normal SIM card.
  5. The GPS module receives satellite signals and gives the latitude and longitude of the device.
  6. The Servo motor rotates to an exact angle, used for locks, arms and flaps.

E&TC / ECE viva questions on this project

What is the aim of the IoT Weather Drone Airship For Weather Forecasting project?

A remotely controlled airship that carries weather sensors into the upper atmosphere. It uses GSM for unlimited range and sends live temperature, pressure and humidity data for forecasting.

Explain the working of your project in short.

12 V power adapter / step-down transformer supplies the circuit; a regulator gives the controller and sensors a steady 5 V. The Camera module captures images or video for recognition and monitoring. The NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi board connects the system to Wi-Fi so readings can be pushed to an IoT dashboard and commands received from a phone. The GSM module sends SMS alerts or makes calls to the registered phone number using a normal SIM card.

What is NodeMCU and how does it connect to the internet?

NodeMCU is a development board built on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi chip. It joins a Wi-Fi network using the SSID and password in the code and sends data over HTTP or MQTT to a cloud server.

How is the camera image processed?

Frames are captured and processed with OpenCV: converted to grayscale, filtered and passed to a detection or recognition model that labels faces, objects or number plates.

How does the GSM module send an SMS?

The microcontroller sends AT commands over serial, for example AT+CMGF=1 to select text mode and AT+CMGS with the phone number followed by the message. The module transmits it over the mobile network.

How does a GPS module find its location?

It receives timing signals from at least four satellites, calculates the distance to each from the signal delay and solves for its position. The module outputs NMEA sentences like $GPGGA with latitude, longitude and time.

How is a servo motor controlled?

With a PWM signal at 50 Hz. A pulse of 1 ms gives about 0°, 1.5 ms gives 90° and 2 ms gives 180°. The internal feedback potentiometer holds the angle.

Explain the block diagram of your project.

The input section senses the real-world quantity, the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi board processes it according to the program, and the output section acts locally and sends the data or alert wirelessly. The power supply section feeds every block.

Which communication protocols are used between the modules?

UART (serial) for the GSM, GPS, Bluetooth or fingerprint modules. Each protocol was chosen because the module supports it and it uses the fewest pins.

What is the operating voltage of the circuit?

The controller and most sensors work at 5 V (ESP boards and some modules at 3.3 V). The battery powers the board, and a regulator steps it down. Motors and relays get their own supply line so they do not reset the controller.

Is your system open-loop or closed-loop?

Closed-loop: sensors measure the actual position, distance or condition and the controller corrects the actuators until the target is reached.
